This translates to an approx. 10% increase in the cost of raw gold, and therefore a minimum of 10% for finished retail jewelry. Assuming keystone pricing, this could translate to a 20% increase in finished jewelry, when gold changes from $550 per ounce (December 2005), to $600 per ounce (April 2006).

If gold were to reach $800 per ounce, the consumer could expect an additional 33.3% increase in the price of raw gold, assuming a price shift from $600 per ounce to $800, or a 45% increase in the price of raw gold if assuming a price shift from $550 per ounce to $800 per ounce. This could mean a price increase in the retail jewelry world of anywhere from 33.3% if no additional mark up is made by jewelers on the increase in the price of gold, or an over 65% increase in retail jewelry if jewelers maintain keystone pricing (which is a standard minimum for most traditional, brick and mortar and some online jewelry retailers).

How will this effect online jewelers?

Online jewelers are often selling their gold jewelry at discount prices, and so this price shift will be played out differently for online merchants.

Although online jewelers will feel a price increase from their suppliers, many do not charge keystone pricing, and so the price shifts may not be as dramatic as they will be at brick and mortar jewelry stores. Most online jewelers also do not have to contend with stocking merchandise and so they will not have to anticipate the realities of rising costs into their current pricing structures. The Asian influenced has much to do with what is sold today comes from foreign manufacturers. Look at Taiwan, China and Thailand and you will see the sources for much of the goods sold by companies such as Wall Mart, J.C. Penney and many others including mall chain stores. Price is the dictator here, beyond name recognition or quality. Unfortunately, the average consumer is not educated in determining quality of jewelry and neither are many sales people who have the job to sell the product, as if selling socks or umbrellas.

Is it Brand-Name recognition? Ten years into the Branding Revolution, 95 jewelers out of 100 will say that they can't sell or tell one branded diamond from another. "I've never once had a customer," says this store's manager, "who came through my door asking for [the nationally branded diamond he's just sold onto]. But we average two significant [brand-name designer] sales a week - and always to customers who came in asking for him. That's branding." Curiously, this store doesn't carry Rolex or Breitling, though they have done so in the past.

Bird, insect and animal themes were set in metal and many pieces began implementing the use of spring mechanisms. Delicate pendants of colored stones and pearls were also highly popular during this time.

During the time from 1900 until 1950, the styles and designs of jewelry changed rapidly and substantially. Early in the 1900s jewelry became very delicate and feminine. Bows, ribbons, urns, starts and small flower garlands were seen widely during this time. Platinum on yellow gold with diamond trim or large diamonds with smaller diamonds for accents became very popular during this era. Stones were cut into triangles and other shapes along with colored gemstones such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds and onyx to create beautiful and contrasting combinations.

During World War II much of the gold and silver and all of the platinum were needed to fund military spending.

During this time the American jewelry market burst into its own. Colored gold in beautiful yellows, pinks and greens were developed. Designs were also developed that used three dimensional and sculptured ribbons, bows and folds that resembled fabrics. After the war the jewelry became much less romantic and took on more of a militaristic look.

Textured gold was also introduced and the look virtually dominated the 1950s with Florentine finishes, twisted rope, braided wire and meshing. During this decade it was customary to wear gold jewelry without gemstones during the day while diamonds and other stones were worn for evenings. Amethyst, turquoise and coral were among the most popular colored gemstones. White cultured pearls were also becoming highly popular for both day and night wear.
